If Drawings Were Photographs

I love this project by Tom Edwards/ Rob Matthews. Tom first created the drawings, and then Rob re-created the drawings as photos. Its a great illustration of how media changes one's perspective completely, and how we've come to expect certain things within the constructs of one media (for example here, drawing), that seem completely unexpected within another medium (here, photography). You can check this out at Rob Matthews' website. Also, there is a book of the images available at It's Nice That.

Issuu

So... this is the best thing ever.

Issuu.com is a website where you can self-publish online magazine-style documents for free. It is SO freaking easy to work. You just compile a multi-page document- (illustrator, photoshop, indesign, whatever...), upload it, and the website immediately automatically formats the document into a flash presentation like the ones posted here. You can zoom in for high res detail, "flip" through pages like an actual magazine, even sell ad space if you want... and there are really no design limitations at all. You can embed them to your website (facebook, whatever) and they are also published through Issuu's website, and where you can browse tons of internationally published magazines for free, including some actual print magazines that are now using Issuu.

Look no further for great self-promotion pieces or for publishing exhibition catalogs. I mean... the possibilities are endless. I'm still not sure how I'm going to use this. But I know I'm absolutely going to use this.

Maya Bloch

Maya Bloch's work, according to her artists statement, attempt to achieve a marriage of "fictional and real" biographies, often relating images of strangers in certain familiar situations and positions that feel like those one might experience as a member of a family. The manner of painting these figures lend to a sense of distortion and distress that bring a kind of anxiety to the work, which speak to a certain kind of isolation reserved for societal situations in which one is supposed to feel the most close.
