Clayton Brothers

Here's some new-ish work from the Clayton Brothers. I just love how dense these paintings are. There is so much going on...and it all blows my mind....

Why make art?

This are questions I've been thinking about for a while, and I wanted to see
what you guys think. If you are an artist, what role do you think art plays
in your life, and in the lives of your viewers? Does it serve or have a purpose?
Why make art in the first place?
I'm curious to hear your personal takes on these questions, rather than generalized responses.

I'm really looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

Juliana Swaney

In February I'm going to be in a show with Juliana Swaney, so I just looked her up and felt a little like I might have just discovered my secret art twin. We seem to have a common visual vocabulary, including things like word balloons, overtly feminine imagery, anthropomorphis of hair and animals. Juliana's work is more delicate, I think, and she uses pencil drawing. Her drawing style, composition, and use of victorian-like images of people make a kind of historical reference to old portrait photography. The images speak in the kind of soft whisper one quiets the room to hear.

Douglas Max Utter

Sometimes in Doug Utter's work the interest isn't lying in the image itself, but what has been obliterated from the image. Through layers of thick and thin, faces and landscapes peek out from under shapes approximating hair and clothes and walls and sky. It lends mystery and engages the viewer at a level beyond simple aesthetics. These paintings are like mental pictures of the way you might remember something that happened five years ago...fuzzy but with a kind of emotional clarity.
